Joby doubles production capacity with Marina expansion

The expanded 435,500 square foot site added flight test capacity, new roles in training and maintenance, and key FAA certification support.

Joby Aviation has increased the footprint of its Marina, California facility, doubling its aircraft production capacity to support the company’s commercial scale-up. The site, now 435,500 square feet, is expected to produce up to 24 aircraft annually and will support training, maintenance and FAA certification.

The expansion was marked by the addition of a sixth aircraft to Joby's flight test fleet, which received its airworthiness certificate within a week of completion. “Reimagining urban mobility takes speed, scale and precision manufacturing,” says Joby’s chief product officer Eric Allison. “Our expanded manufacturing footprint in both California and Ohio is preparing us to do just that.”

The expansion forms part of a strategy based on three principles: US-based innovation, vertical integration and close collaboration with Toyota. The company builds and tests aircraft in-house at sites across California and Ohio. Toyota engineers assist with production process improvement and custom tooling.

Joby’s broader network includes its Santa Cruz headquarters, its San Carlos powertrain and electronics site, and its Dayton, Ohio site, which will soon support FAA production certification and scale to 500 aircraft per year.
