The milestone represents progress toward FAA Type Certification as Joby prepares for flight testing ahead of commercial service launch.

Joby Aviation has begun power-on testing of its first FAA-conforming aircraft built for Type Inspection Authorization (TIA). The company said this milestone allows it to start thousands of hardware and software integration tests before “for credit” flight testing with FAA pilots.

“Beginning this aircraft subsystem testing is the culmination of more than a decade of focused engineering and certification refinements,” says Didier Papadopoulos, president of aircraft OEM at Joby. “This is the moment where our intended type design, our manufacturing process, and our certification strategy converge into one physical asset.”

Joby’s first TIA-ready aircraft was manufactured under its quality management system and adheres to the type design approved for TIA testing. Each aircraft will use FAA-conforming components inspected and signed off by FAA Designated Airworthiness Representatives.

Flight testing by Joby pilots is expected to start later this year, followed by FAA pilots in 2026. During TIA testing, the FAA and Joby will validate performance, handling, and operational procedures needed for certification and commercial operations.
