GE Aerospace grows in West Jefferson to meet narrowbody demand

More than 40 new jobs will be created as the company adds over 35,000 sq ft and installs advanced equipment at the facility.

GE Aerospace is investing nearly $53 million to expand its West Jefferson facility by more than 35,000 square feet and purchase new equipment. The project will boost production capacity for in-demand narrowbody aircraft engines and create over 40 new jobs in the area. The investment will be made over three years, with support from a $100,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund.

Dylan Gerding, GE Aerospace site leader for West Jefferson, says: “West Jefferson will now have an even bigger role to play in building the future of flight for GE Aerospace. This expansion is good news for the community, and it is good news for our customers, who are eager to have our engines power their aircraft.”

The West Jefferson site produces key parts for CFM LEAP engines including rotating parts, blisks, high pressure turbines and spools. New roles will include apprentice machinists, inspectors and engineers. The company works with Wilkes Community College and the NC Edge programme to train local workers.

Local and state officials praised the expansion. Ashe County, Ashe County Job Development Inc. and the Town of West Jefferson will contribute $1 million in grants. GE Aerospace employs about 2,000 workers across four North Carolina sites.
