CJ3 Gen3 prototype completes maiden flight in Wichita

The prototype aircraft pairs Garmin Emergency Autoland with the G3000 avionics suite as Textron Aviation continues certification work on the light jet.

The Cessna Citation CJ3 Gen3 prototype has completed its first flight, taking the light jet into flight testing as Textron Aviation works toward FAA certification. The flight means all three next-generation Citation light jets, the CJ4 Gen3, CJ3 Gen3 and M2 Gen3, have entered flight testing.

Pilots Steve Helmer and Dave Welbrock flew the aircraft from Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport on a flight lasting almost two hours, focusing on cockpit software functionality. The prototype reached a maximum altitude of 41,000 feet and a maximum speed of 278 knots indicated.

Steve Helmer, flight test pilot, says: “From takeoff to landing, the aircraft demonstrated the handling qualities and system performance we expected. This first flight validated months of preparation and provided a strong foundation as we expand testing and continue the certification programme.”

Chris Hearne, senior vice president, Engineering & Programs, adds: “Comprehensive flight testing will begin for this aircraft, with rigorous validation of its performance as we continue to work toward FAA certification and entry into service.”

The CJ3 Gen3 combines Garmin Emergency Autoland with the Garmin G3000 avionics platform and retains the performance and payload attributes of the CJ3 family. The cabin includes swivel seating, RGB accent lighting and a naturally lit lavatory, with seating for up to 10 occupants and 1,000lb of baggage capacity. The aircraft has a maximum range of 2,040nm and a maximum payload of 2,135lb.
