Delivery of third KC-390 and launch of A-29N flight test campaign marked two programme landmarks in Portuguese Air Force cooperation with Embraer.

Embraer and the Portuguese Air Force have marked the delivery of a third KC-390 Millennium alongside the start of flight testing for the A-29N Super Tucano. Both aircraft took part in a joint flight during the event.

The KC-390 is part of a six-aircraft deal, with ten further options open to NATO and allied nations. The A-29N, meanwhile, stems from a 2024 order for 12 aircraft. Portugal is the launch customer for this NATO-configured variant.

Portuguese Air Force KC-390 programme director Major-General João Nogueira says: “The delivery of the third KC-390 will increase our operational capability and simultaneously consolidate experience in the aircraft, in progress to reach Full Operational Capability and establish new frontiers in the usage of this platform. The launch of the A-29N flight test campaign shows that we are in a good path to obtain a distinctive platform, with a configuration idealised by Portuguese Air Force, that will prove its capability in advanced training and operational usage.”

Bosco da Costa Junior, Embraer Defense & Security president and CEO, adds: “This delivery and joint flight represent major milestones that reflect our commitment to supporting Portugal’s defence with efficient and innovative solutions, always grounded in our strong, long-term partnership.”

The KC-390 can carry 26 tonnes, reach 470 knots, and operate from unpaved runways. It is NATO-compliant and has been selected by 11 countries to date. The A-29N adds NATO-specific systems to a platform already used by 22 air forces worldwide.
