Enstrom receives FAA tick for crash resistant 480B fuel system

FAA and EASA validation of the crash resistant technology allows Enstrom to meet new safety regulations and reenter international markets.

Enstrom Helicopter Corporation has secured full FAA certification for the crash resistant fuel system (CRFS) on its turbine-powered 480B helicopter, clearing the way for renewed global sales of the model.

The system, developed in partnership with Safran Aerosystems, uses a new bladder material, breakaway fittings to seal off fuel lines, and reinforced structures to protect against leakage and fire following impact.

The U.S. Congress had previously approved an FAA mandate requiring helicopter manufacturers to adopt CRFS technology. Certification from EASA is expected within weeks, allowing Enstrom to reenter the European helicopter market.

Enstrom partnered with Safran Aerosystems to develop and test the CRFS. The companies are also close to completing certification for the CRFS on the piston-powered 280FX, expected in Q1 2026.
