Joby flies two electric air taxis together for the first time

A simultaneous flight trial in California built on piloted transition testing and demonstrated increased maturity across Joby's six-aircraft fleet.

Joby Aviation has flown two of its electric aircraft at the same time for the first time as part of its test campaign. The flight took place in Marina, California on 9 May and marked further progress toward type certification and commercial launch.

The milestone followed recent full transition flights with a pilot onboard and comes as Joby accelerates its timeline toward passenger operations in 2025. Founder and CEO JoeBen Bevirt says: “This achievement not only demonstrates Joby’s leadership in the sector it’s another indication of the power of American innovation. Our air taxi is designed, manufactured and assembled here in the US and we are a proudly American company employing engineers and other experts across 40 different US states.”

Joby intends to begin service in Los Angeles and New York in partnership with Delta and Uber. Virgin Atlantic and ANA Holdings are set to bring the platform to the UK and Japan respectively, while Dubai operations are being targeted for early 2026. The company has now completed over 40,000 miles of testing and says its sixth aircraft is undergoing final checks. Two are based at Edwards AFB supporting its defence collaborations.
