The company's lightweight, high-speed electric engines offer scalable power and support hybrid-electric helicopters with airborne power generation

MagniX has introduced the HeliStorm range of electric engines designed for helicopters, spanning from light single-engine models to hybrid-electric twin-engine rotorcraft. The engines, when combined with MagniX’s Samson batteries, provide a complete electric solution for vertical lift applications.

The first HeliStorm engine delivers 330kW of peak power at a weight of just 75 kg, with key features including operating speeds of 6,000-7,000 RPM, scalable power output and enhanced fault handling. MagniX has built on previous integrations with Robinson R44 helicopters, which included the world’s first point-to-point flight of an electric helicopter in 2022.

Reed Macdonald, CEO of MagniX, says: “The helicopter market represents a tremendous opportunity for MagniX, as the strengths of our technology align well with the market need. MagniX’s HeliStorm engines expand upon our existing world-leading capabilities and deliver a step change in performance, reliability and value for our customers.”

Riona Armesmith, CTO of MagniX, adds: “Our HeliStorm engines are designed for the specific demands of vertical lift applications and will give MagniX the ability to electrify a wider range of platforms.”

Robinson Helicopters CEO David Smith says: “Robinson is supportive of MagniX’s HeliStorm electric engine range and we look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts to deliver market-leading sustainable helicopters.”
