Collaboration with US Air Force labs is set to test whether wire-based additive manufacturing can be used for large structural components.
The 100,000 square-foot facility will initially house research and development of laser metal deposition with wire (LMD-w) additive manufacturing technology for large-scale titanium aerostructures.
As well as facilitating larger components, GKN's technology enables parts to be produced faster than current methods, uses raw materials more efficiently, and may ultimately result in reduced costs.
