Altera Corporation, the largest pure-play FPGA provider with a full-spectrum portfolio, today announced the expansion of its Agilex FPGA and SoC FPGA portfolio to support a broader range of aerospace and defence programmes. Altera's defence-grade Agilex FPGAs help system developers meet stringent performance, reliability and environmental requirements while providing the flexibility to adapt to evolving mission needs.
Defence-grade Agilex devices are designed to operate across temperatures ranging from -55°C to 125°C, with leaded-ball and ruggedised packaging options designed to withstand temperature cycling, vibration and shock. These capabilities help maintain reliable operation in harsh environments where extreme temperatures and mechanical stress can compromise mission-critical electronics.
Agilex FPGAs are fabricated in the United States, providing a domestic source of wafer fabrication that supports supply resilience and helps customers plan for the long service lives and continuity requirements common to aerospace and defence programmes. Together, these capabilities help defence system developers reduce design risk and build long-life platforms targeting challenging operating environments.
Extending Agilex FPGAs leadership architecture across more defence applications
Defence-grade Agilex devices will be available across Altera's entire Agilex portfolio, giving customers a scalable path from low-power, cost-optimised Agilex 3 FPGAs through mid-range Agilex 5 and high-performance Agilex 7 FPGAs to Agilex 9 Direct RF-Series FPGAs. Customers can select the right combination of performance, power efficiency and integration for applications ranging from edge systems and embedded processing to high-bandwidth communications, sensing and electronic warfare. Extending defence-grade support across this common architecture helps customers streamline platform decisions and adapt their designs as mission requirements evolve.
Underpinning this portfolio is Altera's high-performance HyperFlex architecture, which enables higher clock frequencies and greater processing throughput by balancing pipeline delays and shortening critical logic and routing paths through Hyper-Retiming and Hyper-Pipelining.
"Tomorrow's aerospace and defence systems will need to integrate more sensing, processing and AI capabilities within tightly constrained platforms," said Farhad Shafai, head of business solutions and marketing at Altera. "Our focus is on giving customers a programmable foundation they can build on for years, adding capabilities as technology advances and mission priorities change."
