New advancement in medical transportation: ERC unveils electric aircraft (eVTOL) for faster, more affordable patient transport solutions in Europe

Today, ERC System GmbH publicly unveils its innovative eVTOL, specifically designed for patient and casualty transport. An eVTOL is a fully electric aircraft capable of vertical takeoffs and landings. The medical eVTOLs developed by ERC are designed to facilitate both secondary transfers of patients between various clinics and the initial treatment of casualties.

ERC is tackling a critical global gap in patient transport by developing a medical eVTOL. Annually, around 82 million acutely ill and injured individuals in Europe and the USA need urgent and swift medical transport. At a launch event attended by Judith Gerlach, Bavarian State Minister for Health, Care, and Prevention, ERC today unveils a demonstrator of its innovative eVTOL, scheduled for market launch in 2029. The aircraft, with a cabin large enough to facilitate emergency medical care mid- flight, boasts a load capacity of 450 kg and a range of approximately 190 km. This eVTOL is intended to enhance existing helicopter transport capabilities in Europe.

ERC is advancing the practical deployment of its aircraft through strategic partnerships. The company has signed letters of intent with GesundheitsregionPlus Unterallgäu-Memmingen and DRF Luftrettung, one of Europe's premier air rescue organizations. These agreements are part of a pilot project aimed at accelerating the development, certification, and operational testing of the aircraft. Additionally, ERC is collaborating with the Clinic and Polyclinic for Trauma Surgery at the Klinikum rechts der Isar, Technical University of Munich, to optimize the medical capabilities of the eVTOLs.

Bavarian State Minister for Health, Judith Gerlach says: “Especially in rural areas, the quick and efficient transport of patients and the injured is crucial. Innovative air rescue systems could complement the existing ambulance and rescue helicopter services in the future.”

Founded in 2020, ERC now employs 80 dedicated professionals. Based in Ottobrunn near Munich, the company is led by a team of seasoned aerospace engineers under the leadership of CEO Dr. David Löbl. The market introduction of the certified eVTOL for patient and casualty transport is planned for 2029, with a flight-capable demonstrator expected by the end of 2024. In light of the significant shortfall in patient transport services, ERC is witnessing high demand within Germany and anticipates considerable market potential across Europe and the USA.
