Hermeus pushes Quarterhorse Mk 2.1 beyond Mach 1

Quarterhorse Mk 2.1 reaches Mach 1.21 on its third flight as Hermeus accelerates development of future high-speed military aircraft.

Hermeus has completed the first supersonic flight of its Quarterhorse Mk 2.1 demonstrator, reaching Mach 1.21 during the aircraft’s third test flight from Spaceport America over White Sands Missile Range air space.

The achievement comes less than three months after the aircraft’s first flight and 364 days after Hermeus flew its first Quarterhorse Mk 1 aircraft, highlighting the company’s rapid iteration approach to aircraft development.

Our country's ability to deliver new asymmetric military capability at scale depends on teams that can solve hard technical challenges quickly. That's exactly what we're proving with each test flight we conduct and each new aircraft we build at Hermeus.”

Quarterhorse Mk 2.1 is the first of three F-16-scale supersonic aircraft planned within the company’s development roadmap. The aircraft is powered by a Pratt & Whitney F100 engine.

Hermeus says its rapid build-test-fly cycle allows the company to use flight data to improve performance and reduce programme risk more quickly than traditional development timelines.

The company is already building Quarterhorse Mk 2.2, with Mk 2.3 also in development, as it pushes toward sustained high-Mach flight capability.

The milestone comes as the Pentagon increases focus on high-speed aircraft programmes amid growing competition from China and other near-peer adversaries. Hermeus says faster unmanned aircraft could improve response times and expand operational capability in contested environments.
