magniX readies magniAIR engine for RV-10 electric test flight

The propulsion system is set to power a modified RV-10 as rising costs and ageing fleets drive demand for alternatives to traditional engines.

magniX has introduced its magniAIR electric engine for general aviation, targeting aircraft used in recreational flying and flight training.

The engine is being integrated into a Van’s Aircraft RV-10 kitplane as part of a full magniX powertrain, with first flight planned later this year and commercial availability expected in 2027.

magniAIR delivers 175 kW at 55 kg and builds on the company’s existing electric propulsion architecture, including safety and fault handling systems developed through earlier programmes. It is designed to integrate into aircraft currently powered by 120–175 kW piston engines.

The launch extends magniX’s fully integrated offering, which combines electric engines, power electronics and Samson batteries. The company is targeting kitplane builders and private owners as an entry point, highlighting lower operating costs driven by reduced maintenance requirements and the absence of fuel burn.

Regulatory developments are expected to support uptake. The FAA’s MOSAIC rules are set to broaden the definition of light sport aircraft, potentially opening additional use cases for electric propulsion in this segment.

Flight training is a key focus, as operators face rising fuel and maintenance costs alongside a shortage of pilots. magniX positions magniAIR as a route to reducing training costs while maintaining operational capability, with potential applications also extending into eVTOL and defence.

“Many training aircraft in use today were manufactured in the 1970s,” adds Ben Loxton, VP of New Product Development at magniX. “Fuel prices and maintenance costs are causing the cost of flight training to rise at the same time as the industry faces an acute shortage of pilots. magniAIR offers to reduce the expense of flight training and other small aircraft applications with a lower cost of operation, reduced maintenance, and zero carbon emissions.”
