WindRunner is an aircraft designed for its primary mission: To fly turbine blades up to 105m in length directly to wind farm sites, landing on semi-prepared dirt runways as short as 1,800 metres.
A year-long project equipped helicopters with cameras, computer and interface display, identifying aerial traffic including birds and drones, determining location in GPS-denied environments, and offering landing guidance.
The experimental data has potential for training artificial intelligence algorithms for maturing flight controls and future digital systems offering great reliability and incremental levels of autonomy, with reduced workload.
