RTX’s Collins Aerospace launches PHEDRE Consortium to advance next-generation propeller technologies
Monday, 13 April 2026

Collins Aerospace, an RTX business, will lead the PHEDRE consortium (Projet de modules Hélices Economiques, DuRables pour l’Environnement), an initiative focused on the development of advanced design methods and tools for next-generation turboprop propellers, with a focus on reducing noise, weight and aerodynamic impact.

The PHEDRE consortium brings together teams of leaders across Collins Aerospace and outside entities to address critical aircraft efficiency technological barriers while enhancing passenger comfort and reducing the impact of propeller noise.

“Through PHEDRE, we will push the boundaries of innovation, aiming to deliver next-generation propeller technologies that enhance performance and efficiency for our customers,” said Jean-Francois Chanut, vice president and general manager, Propeller Systems, Collins Aerospace. “The PHEDRE program is a strong example of synergy and innovation, supported by the French government, to drive meaningful progress in the aerospace industry, reinforcing the importance of local and international collaboration in advancing aerospace technologies.”

Collins Aerospace’s participation in the PHEDRE program aligns with the business’s commitment to supporting its customers’ efforts to decrease operating costs and noise levels, while maintaining affordability for passengers. The initiative will focus on three key objectives:

- Advancing Design Methods and Tools: Developing innovative design methods and tools to optimize propeller configurations based on criteria such as noise reduction, aerodynamic efficiency, weight, complexity and manufacturing cycle time.

- Enhancing Simulation Capabilities: Improving the understanding and simulation of physical phenomena associated with propeller operation to enable precise design and sizing.

- Elevating Service Offerings: Implementing value-driven initiatives to enhance service capabilities and meet the high expectations of propeller operators.

With propeller systems playing a key role in the evolution of turboprop platforms, PHEDRE underscores Collins Aerospace Ratier-Figeac’s leadership in research and development within Europe. The initiative builds on the business’s legacy of innovation and its commitment to delivering technologies that drive performance improvements.

In December 2025, Collins Aerospace was selected by the French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC) for a France 2030 grant to lead the consortium over the next three years.
