The Russian MiG-29M OVT fighter performs the unique aerobatic display at the air show LAVEX-2007 in Libya
Monday, 29 October 2007

On the 29th October 2007 near Tripoli (Libya) takes off the 3rd Arab-African air show and conference «LAVEX-2007».

As part of the united Russian display team, headed by the «Rosobronexport», the Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG proudly presents the developmental super-maneuverable fighter MiG-29M with the deflectable thrust engine (in Russian - OVT). In the Libyan skies the Russian MiG-29M OVT shall demonstrate some unique gravity-defying aerobatics that no other combat aircraft in the world can perform.

The MiG-29M OVT has been developed on the basis of the MiG-29M prototype to become a flying test bed for the RD-33 deflectable thrust vector engine to research the new engine's influence on the aircraft combat and in-flight performance.

The engines with the thrust vector deflection system are developed by the JSC «Klimov» (Saint-Petersburg). The OVT powerplant is offered as an option for installation on the MiG-29M/M2 and the state-of-the-art multi-role MiG-35 belonging to the unificated family of «4++» generation fighters.

The use of all-aspect thrust vectoring on the serially produced MiGs will make these aircraft more efficiently controlled especially in the super-maneuverability mode (i.e. at the high angles of attack and minimum speed). In the normal flight regime the deflectable thrust engines will ensure the MiGs' easy three-dimensional stabilization while reducing the trimming efforts and consequently, the fuel consumption.

Vladimir Barkovskiy, Director of the Mikoyan Design Bureau Engineering Center (RAC «MiG»), comments: "The use of all-aspect OVT makes the handling of a MiG fighter more precise and effective, irrespectively of the angle of attack. This is applicable to not only the performance of super-maneuvers but also to the normal piloting. Thus the MiGs obtain an extra serious advantage in aerial engagements by considerably improving the flight safety in limit modes and decreasing the pilot's workload. Thanks to this the pilot can focus more on his combat mission. The aircraft's new capabilities improve its operational efficiency and enhance its competitiveness".

The MiG-29M OVT current aerobatic program includes the unique jaw-dropping maneuvers made possible by the aircraft super-maneuverability meaning that it can fly at low (near-zero) speeds without limitations to the angle of attack while fully maintaining controllability.

In the LAVEX-2007 flight program the MiG-29M OVT aerobatics will be performed by RAC «?iG» test pilot Mikhail Belyaev. His flying displays always stand out due to their complexity, brilliant technique and superb airmanship. In July 2006 at the air show Royal International Air Tattoo (Fairford, UK) RAC «MiG» Chief test pilot Pavel Vlasov and Mikhail Belyaev were awarded the King Hussein of Jordan Memorial Sword for the best overall display of the MiG-29M OVT.

Within 11th to 15th November 2007 the visitors to Dubai Air Show (UAE) will also have the opportunity to enjoy the MiG-29M OVT breath-taking pirouettes in the skies.
