PRESS RELEASE
Issued by: AMETEK Aerospace & Defense
AMETEK Aerospace & Defense has developed the Total Air Probe™, an innovative new instrument for Aircraft Air Data Systems that combines multiple air sensor functions into a single unit that saves both weight and installation costs, while increasing accuracy and reliability.
"The Total Air Probe builds on AMETEK's extensive experience in aircraft engine and airframe applications," comments Wes Hardin, Vice President and General Manager of AMETEK Aerospace & Defense. "Its development results from a strong interest among aircraft OEMs in upgrading technology, while providing significant benefits to operators."
The Total Air Probe offers several major advantages. By combining multiple air data functions into a single unit, it reduces installation time and expense. Designed to meet the industry's latest requirements for altitude accuracy, lightning protection, and deicing, its highly accurate and reliable air data pressure sensors detect Angle of Attack, Pitot Air Pressure, Static Air Pressure, and Total Air Temperature.
Because it has fewer connections than a traditional Air Data System, the Total Air Probe is more reliable. It also has automatic heater power control for improved heating efficiency and an integral Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) optimally located relative to the airflow to provide Total Air Temperature readings to the Air Data System.
"By locating the pressure sensors closer to the airflow, the Total Air Probe's readings are more accurate than those provided by systems with remotely located pressure sensors that add pneumatic pressure delays," notes Mr. Hardin.
"The pressure sensors also are utilized in monitoring the angle of attack or sideslip, depending on the location of the unit's pressure ports relative to the air flow, providing a more accurate reading for altitude as well."
