Starrag tackles titanium with new Scharmann Ecoforce Ti machining centres
Thursday, 9 July 2015

Starrag has expanded its range of machines for titanium machining with the introduction of the Scharmann Ecoforce Ti horizontal machining centres covering X, Y and Z axis capacities up to 6,300 mm by 3,000 mm by 3,000 mm and featuring three-axis roughing head and/or five-axis fork-type head for finish machining.

These new models align with the Starrag philosophy of guaranteeing the consistent highly-efficient production of high-quality parts – in this case specifically to satisfy the aerospace industry's increasing demands for the cost-effective machining of titanium.

The new machines combine the renowned construction capabilities of Starrag group companies' expertise in vertical table design and jig boring column accuracy to result in a machine range that excels in levels of rigidity and machining accuracy.

In addition, a wide range of machining flexibility is offered via automatic head changing possibilities and the use of high-capacity tool magazines.

Ecoforce Ti 2040/2540 models feature X, Y and Z axis travels of 4,300 mm by 2,500mm/3,000 mm by 3,000 mm, while the 2060/2560 models have a respective X axis capacity of 6,000 mm and similar Y and Z traverses.

Workpieces weighing up to 8,000 kgs and 10,000 kgs can be accommodated on the 2040/2540 models; and 12,000 kgs and 15,000 kgs on the 2060/2560 series.

In all cases the machines boast X, Y and Z rapid traverse rates of 20 m/min and HSK B 160 toolholders. The 50 kW fork-type milling head, which develops 10 to 3,000 revs/min and a torque of 2,400 Nm, is complemented by a 75 kW spindle extension rated at 3,000 revs/min and 5,500 Nm.
