PRESS RELEASE
Issued by: Dormer Pramet
Composite materials are becoming increasingly important in the manufacture of not just aircraft, but also cars, boats, wind turbines and even bridges. Largely due to their excellent strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance, their use has increased significantly over recent years.
As more and more industries embrace composites technology, the need for knowledge increases. For this reason, Dormer has invested in the creation of a Research Technology Centre (RTC).
Here, extensive development work on cutting tool geometries, substrates and coatings is carried out to directly address the machining issues presented by the laminate structure of composite materials - namely delamination, splintering and fraying. The theoretical and practical work undertaken by the RTC has already resulted in tangible advances in tooling technology.
Ricky Payling, key account manager Aerospace and Composites at Dormer, explains the focus of the RTC, "research into the structure and machining characteristics of composites is gathering pace all the time. As such, the RTC will place Dormer and its partners on a 'fast-track' to understanding these materials and, consequently, provide customers with tooling solutions that offer increased productivity, improved quality and reduced costs."
Dormer's comprehensive offer is detailed in a new brochure. Covering hand-held and CNC-operated applications, the range includes both carbide and PCD drills, reamers, countersinks and end mills.
A flexible, short-lead time engineered specials service and reconditioning and regrinding facility complete the package.
