Mecmesin, a specialist in force and torque measurement technology, joins Battery Ventures’ Physical Properties Testing Group
Monday, 17 September 2018

Battery Ventures, a global technology investment firm, has reached an agreement for its platform in the material-property testing market, Physical Properties Testing (PPT), to acquire Mecmesin, a global supplier of force- and torque-testing equipment for consumer and industrial products.

Mecmesin, based near Horsham, West Sussex, England, will join existing PPT portfolio company James Heal, which makes lab instruments and test materials for the textile industry. Battery—which has raised more than $6.9 billion since its inception—maintains an active practice investing in industrial-technology companies in the U.S. and Europe and has acquired more than 40 such companies and brands in the last decade.

Mecmesin’s equipment is used in R&D and quality-control laboratories and manufacturing plants around the world to assess and ensure the quality of raw materials, components and finished products. Industries using Mecmesin’s products range from pharmaceuticals and consumer-packaged goods—drug makers use Mecmesin’s equipment to test pill bottles, for example—to automotive, aerospace and construction.

Customers rely on the company’s affordable testing machines for a wide range of force- and torque- measurement applications, including tests involving tension, compression, torque, adhesion, flexure, coefficient of friction, crush and others. Many of Mecmesin’s products are built to withstand tough factory conditions, allowing customers to immediately test products on the factory floor, instead of using a more-expensive outside lab later.

“We are pleased to welcome Mecmesin to the PPT family, where its force-and-torque testing expertise with various types of products will complement James Heal’s focus on textile testing,” said Don Templeman, PPT’s chairman.

Added Jesse Feldman, a general partner with Battery: “The Mecmesin business is diverse and growing, and we are excited to explore potential synergies between its products and those of other companies in the PPT Group. This should help Mecmesin’s current product brands grow sales even more.”

Mecmesin was founded in 1977 by Jim Oakley, a design engineer, and has since expanded to include regional offices in the U.S., China, Thailand and Germany. The company also maintains a global network of distributors in more than 50 countries to provide technical expertise and after-sales support.

“We’re extremely excited to work with PPT and Battery as we become part of this broader physical-property testing group,” said Oakley. “The additional resources will help the company continue its global growth.”
