Boom picks Colorado for Symphony supersonic engine test base

The Adams County facility will support core trials of the Symphony engine, developed in-house for Boom's Overture passenger aircraft.

Boom Supersonic is preparing to test its Symphony propulsion system at the Colorado Air and Space Port in Watkins. The company has selected the site, previously used for hypersonic engine development, for prototype testing later this year. Boom is investing $3–5 million to ready the site.

Symphony is a medium bypass turbofan designed specifically for Overture, Boom’s supersonic airliner. The engine’s 12-foot core includes a compressor, combustor, and turbine, and will undergo high-pressure spool testing at the new facility, located 35 miles from Boom’s Denver headquarters.

Founder and CEO Blake Scholl says, “Symphony is rapidly advancing from concept to reality. By leveraging an existing site, Boom will have the first independently-owned supersonic engine test facility for less than it would have cost to rent a government facility. By vertically integrating propulsion, we are able to accelerate development, reduce costs, and custom-tailor an engine for Overture—unlocking capabilities like Boomless Cruise.”

The facility includes a control room and advanced instrumentation, and testing data will inform design refinement. Boom plans to expand the site in 2026 for full-engine prototype testing.

Adams County Board Chair Lynn Baca says, “Boom’s investment in our community puts us at the forefront of the aerospace industry and reflects our shared commitment to advancing next-generation transportation technologies.”

Colorado Air and Space Port director Jeff Kloska adds, “We look forward to a great partnership with Boom and to advancing our aviation and aerospace ecosystem at CASP.”

Symphony passed a technical review in March, triggering the start of manufacturing. Components are now being produced, with engine assembly due later in the year. Production will be handled by StandardAero in San Antonio.

Symphony’s enhanced transonic performance enables supersonic cruise without audible sonic booms—Boomless Cruise. Overture’s XB-1 demonstrator broke the sound barrier six times without a ground-level boom in early tests. Boom holds 130 Overture orders and pre-orders from United Airlines, American Airlines, and Japan Airlines.
