First SIRTAP prototype enters ground test phase in Spain
Thursday, 19 June 2025
Airbus completed assembly of the tactical UAS at its Getafe facility and scheduled the first flight for late 2025 in Huelva.

The first prototype of Airbus’ high-performance tactical uncrewed aerial system, SIRTAP, has completed assembly and is ready to begin ground testing at the Airbus Defence and Space site in Getafe, Spain. Tests will assess structure, main systems and software and will continue over the coming months.

The maiden flight is scheduled by the end of 2025 at Spain’s National Institute of Aerospace Technology’s Unmanned Systems Test Centre (CEUS) in Huelva. A full flight-test campaign will follow in 2026 and will support airworthiness certification. Spain is due to receive the first system in 2027.

Jean-Brice Dumont, Head of Air Power at Airbus Defence and Space, says: “This new technical achievement for SIRTAP demonstrates Airbus’ agility to drive technological innovation with our aerospace industry partners in a timely manner in accordance with our vision. Designed and manufactured in Spain, SIRTAP will strengthen national sovereignty and will be a benchmark in the tactical unmanned aerial systems segment worldwide. It is another important brick in our ambition to shape a European ecosystem in defence aerospace.”

The Spanish Ministry of Defence has ordered nine systems, each comprising three aircraft and a ground-control station. The delivery will total 27 drones and nine control stations. Airbus will also provide two simulators, which have passed Critical Design Review.

SIRTAP’s ITAR-free design supports its export potential, while naval and weapons-capable variants are also under consideration. The programme is expected to boost industrial expertise in uncrewed aviation.
