Northrop Grumman has expanded its Beacon testbed ecosystem through collaborations with Merlin and Red 6, bringing both autonomy software and augmented reality training tools into a shared environment designed to accelerate the deployment of next-generation mission systems.
Beacon, introduced in June 2025, gives partners the opportunity to test and refine technologies in mission-aligned conditions. Merlin is integrating its Merlin Pilot software onto the Scaled Composites-built Model 437 Vanguard, now modified for optionally autonomous flight. Red 6 is contributing its Advanced Tactical Augmented Reality System (ATARS), which creates large-scale outdoor virtual training environments tailored for both crewed and uncrewed aircraft.
Merlin’s scope includes software-in-the-loop testing, engineering integration and on-site support for flight operations in Mojave, California. The work builds on its role as the US Special Operations Command’s prime autonomy contractor for the C-130J and KC-135.
Matt George, CEO and founder of Merlin, says: “The significance of joining the Beacon project is that it allows us to validate our technology on military aircraft and in mission-relevant environments.”
Red 6 CEO Daniel Robinson adds: “Our partnership with Northrop Grumman will accelerate the integration of these proven capabilities into the autonomous systems that will define the future of collaborative combat operations.”
Northrop Grumman’s Tom Jones, corporate vice president and president of Aeronautics Systems, says: “Beacon is about collaboration across industry between companies of all sizes and expertise. By providing access to the Beacon ecosystem, we’re enhancing innovation, new competition and ultimately the autonomous capabilities that industry can deliver to our customers – with unmatched speed and at scale.”
