General Atomics AeroTec Systems (GA-ATS) has unveiled the Do228 NXT during a roll-out ceremony at its Oberpfaffenhofen facility, presenting the next generation of the Dornier 228 aircraft to the public for the first time.
The aircraft was revealed before an audience of around 500 guests from government, industry, defence, customer and supplier organisations. GA-ATS said the event represented the first unveiling of a newly manufactured aircraft series in Germany for many years and highlighted the country's continuing aerospace manufacturing capability.
Designed for civilian, military and government operators, the Do228 NXT builds on the legacy of the Dornier 228, an aircraft that has supported passenger transport, cargo operations, maritime surveillance, MedEvac missions and disaster response around the world for decades.
The aircraft combines the platform's existing operational strengths with upgraded avionics, a modernised cabin and cockpit, additional mission equipment and what the company describes as a more reliable and cost-optimised supply chain.
A specially designed livery was created for the demonstrator aircraft, with blue triangular patterns intended to reflect both the aircraft's aerodynamic characteristics and its potential role in security and law enforcement missions.
The ceremony also welcomed members of the Dornier family, including Claudio and Camillo Dornier, who highlighted the aircraft's links to the region's aviation heritage and expressed confidence in the future of both the programme and the company.
Florian Rohe, Managing Director of General Atomics AeroTec Systems GmbH, says: “Today is a day that belongs to our team. Every single person at GA-ATS has contributed to make this moment possible, through exceptional craftsmanship, dedication and a shared passion for aviation and our aircraft. The Do228 NXT demonstrator is the result of hard work and continuous improvement. This Roll-Out is not just the debut of a new aircraft, it is proof of what this team is capable of achieving.”
