Laser peening is a surface-enhancement treatment that uses high-energy pulsed laser beams to induce deep compressive residual stresses in metallic aerospace components, improving fatigue life, stress-corrosion resistance, and foreign-object damage tolerance. The process employs plasma-pressure shock waves generated beneath a sacrificial ablative layer and a water tamping medium, and is applied to titanium, nickel superalloy, and aluminium airframe and engine parts.
