Ram air drives are mechanical power-transmission units that harness aerodynamic ram airflow to drive ancillary systems — typically via a turbine or impeller stage coupled to a gearbox or driveshaft — and are used in aircraft to power emergency or standby functions including hydraulic pumps and electrical generators when primary engine-driven or bleed-air systems are unavailable.
