Spark gaps are passive overvoltage protection devices that provide a controlled discharge path between two electrodes separated by a calibrated dielectric medium — typically air, gas, or vacuum — triggering conduction when voltage exceeds a defined breakdown threshold. Used in aerospace ignition systems, transient suppression, and high-voltage switching, they are manufactured to MIL-spec tolerances using refractory electrode materials and hermetically sealed housings to ensure consistent ionisation characteristics across extreme environmental conditions.
