Starter generators are dual-function electromechanical machines that operate initially as DC or AC motors to crank and start aircraft gas turbine engines, then automatically transition to generator mode once the engine reaches self-sustaining speed, supplying regulated electrical power to the aircraft bus; they incorporate wound-field or permanent-magnet rotor assemblies, commutator or brushless designs, and integrated cooling provisions compliant with MIL-STD and DO-160 requirements.
