Ultrasonic fasteners are thermoplastic joining elements installed using high-frequency ultrasonic energy to generate localised frictional heat, causing the fastener or boss material to melt and reform around the substrate, creating a secure mechanical bond without adhesives or conventional tooling; they are used primarily in polymer and composite airframe interior assemblies where conventional metal fastening methods are impractical.
