Multi-role aircraft developed and manufactured by a consortium of European countries.
Aircraft is constructed of Carbon Fibre Composites (CFC) 70% (fuselage, wings, fairings and fin); metals 15% (leading-edge flaps, canards, exhaust nozzle fairings and canopy surrounds; Glass Reinforced Plastics (GRP) 12% (nose radome, inboard leading edge and fin tip); other materials 3% (fin base and leading edge, rudder trailing edge, canopy fairings, outboard flaperons and wingtip pods). Two Eurojet EJ200 engines are adjacently positioned in the rear fuselage. Delta wings are low and tailless.
Sensors provide enhanced situational awareness including Pirate infrared sensor for simultaneously detecting and tracking moving targets, Captor-M sensor for air-to-air and air-to-surface data links and multiple navigation aids.
Single or twin seated pilot(s) are seated in a glass cockpit with all-around vision and Hand-on-Throttle-and-Stick controls (HOTAS). Other cockpit features include a wide angle head up display (HUD), 3 colour multi function head down displays (MHDD) and a Helmet Mounted Symbology System (HMSS).
