Nasmyth Group delivers critical solutions to in flight refuelling for BAE Systems

30/03/2017

Press releaseIssued by Nasmyth Bulwell Ltd.

Simon Beech, Chief Operating Office (UK) of Nasmyth Group attended BAE Systems' prestigious Chairman's Award scheme to celebrate the delivery of a key component for an aircraft in-flight refuelling system.

The in-flight refuelling (IFR) coupling was classed as a critical risk factor which could delay delivery of BAE Systems' programme if consistency of supply could not be achieved. BAE Systems investigated several options and in April 2015Nasmyth Metallics Bullwell embarked on the mission to deliver the IFR coupling as a machine-from-solid componentusing a complex 5-axis machining. This method offers 100% consistency and accuracy and elimated all the issues associated with casting the part.

Having designed, developed, tested and refined their solution, Nasmyth Metallics Bullwell delivered its first production unit IFR coupling to BAE Systems in December 2015. Since then, the company has continued to deliver consistently machined components, so that the IFR coupling is no longer seen as a production issue for the BAE Systemsprogramme.

Simon Beech said “Nasmyth Metallics demonstrates our engineering skills, expertise and commitment to problem solving. I am delighted that our team's deep understanding of BAE Systems' position and challenges has been recognised as a critical part of the Hawk programme's success. Nasmyth Group continually invests in deliveringinnovations in engineering technology, processes and design which meet our customers'' requirements. Seeing such a successful outcome acknowledged with a tangible award is immensely satisfying and encouraging for us.”

The IFR coupling project was nominated in the “Exceeding Customer Expectation” category and the BAE SystemsProcurement team that managed the Nasmyth Group project was selected from 280 nominations. The BAE Systems Chairman's Award was presented by Steve Vandersteen, BAE Systems Vice President of Procurement and Air Frame Supply Chain Director.
