RotorWay International, world's largest kit helicopter company, explores certified market

Fast on the heels of the company's announcement of new owners and key management changes, RotorWay International Inc's new CEO, Grant Norwitz, told a crowd at Heli-Expo in Orlando (FL) that, "We see a large opening in the market for a larger 2-seat 21st-Century helicopter with a sensible price."

With over 900 RotorWay helicopters' already flying and a comprehensive modernization and technical upgrade program already underway on the kit side of the organization, Norwitz sees this as an opportunity to advance the entire industry.

RotorWay is working on the certified helicopter program at its facility in South Africa. Not only does the location offer advantages in regulation and privacy, it offers a clear track to certification. South Africa subscribes to the European (JAR) standards, and JAR certification is a short step to FAA certification.

"We know there are many steps toward certification, and we know we are taking only the first step here, today," Norwitz said later in an interview. "We also know how important it is to take that first step. We have committed, here and now, to pursuing that goal."

Changes expected on the certified Rotorway may include more power, a larger cabin, and more-robust gear. Rotorway already builds a FADEC engine, and has announced upgrades to avionics such as a glass cockpit display in the newest kits. Additionally, the certified Rotorway will incorporate engineering changes designed to make the machines easier to maintain, resulting in management's goal of demonstrating best-in-class operating expenses.
