MD Helicopters, Inc. (MDHI) and Rolls-Royce, the exclusive engine provider for the company's best in class single-engine platforms, have reached an agreement to continue their partnership to provide M250 engines, including the new M250-C47E/3 variant, for MD530-series aircraft as well as growth airframes. This agreement extends a decades-long partnership between two iconic rotorcraft brands.
“We are honored to welcome the C47E/3 engine to our fleet, and to extend our long-term supply and service agreement with Rolls-Royce for the M250 engine variants that power our world-renown single- engine airframes,” said Lynn Tilton, Chief Executive Officer for MD Helicopters. “In the near term, the C47E/3 will deliver the increased power, improved hot-high performance, and reduced operating costs necessary to effectively support the expanding range of mission requirements of our MD 530F and 530G operators.”
“We are excited to continue our long-term relationship with MD Helicopters, and to be selected as the exclusive powerplant for their expanding single-engine rotorcraft fleet,” said .Jason Propes, Rolls-Royce, Senior Vice President Helicopters and Light Turboprop Engines.
Performance Improvements
The new M250-C47E/3 improves efficiency and performance to support a broad range of mission requirements. Key among the enhancements and operator benefits are:
- Dual-channel FADEC interface to simplify engine instrument integration
- Up to 8 percent improvement in 'hot and high' power
- Nearly 4 percent increase in rated take-off power to 675 shaft horsepower
- Reduced Specific Fuel Consumption (SFC) enabling increased range and payload
- Reduced direct operating costs
- Lower MRO over time due to parts commonality and reduced FADEC support costs “Rolls-Royce has been a loyal partner since I purchased MD Helicopters in 2005,” Tilton concludes. “Our shared commitment to product innovation, design, flawless execution and, most importantly, the operator is resolute. I am confident the C47E/3 engine is the best path forward for our single-engine growth.” Following receipt of FAA Type Certification, all MD530-series aircraft will be driven by the powerful and efficient M250-C47E/3 engine.
