Aerion Supersonic selects Electro Magnetic Applications to support the new AS2 supersonic business jet
Thursday, 13 August 2020

Supersonic aircraft company, Aerion, the leader in supersonic technology has selected Electro Magnetic Applications, Inc. (EMA) to support the design of the company's new AS2 supersonic private jet.

"Aviation thrives off new innovations," said EMA's Co-Owner Cody Weber. "The return to commercial supersonic flight with the AS2 program provides our generation of engineers an exciting opportunity to reexplore this flight category with today's advanced technological approaches." The AS2 is a truly groundbreaking advancement in the aerospace industry that has the potential to revolutionize travel by making it more timely, comfortable, and sustainable.

Aircraft of all varieties face electromagnetic questions that must be answered such as the effects of lightning, high intensity radiated fields and wire routing. All commercial aircraft, including the AS2 must overcome these challenges and EMA's proven track record in solving these electromagnetic challenges perfectly positions them to support the progress of the AS2 to production. EMA will be working with Aerion's engineering team on the AS2 project to mitigate the effects of lightning, high intensity radiated fields (HIRF), electromagnetic interference (EMI), and other critical design areas. "The AS2, being a truly innovative aircraft design presents a number of unique challenges," said Justin McKennon, Principal Scientist at EMA. "We will use our extensive experience in bringing validated simulation to bear on electromagnetics problems. We're really excited to help play a role in bringing this great design all the way through certification."

EMA was the first company to use simulation as part of the certification of a commercial aircraft over 25 years ago. Today, EMA is dedicated to making easy to use software products and deploying consulting teams that help manufacturers develop and certify products faster, at lower cost, and with less risk.

Aerion's pursuit of faster point-to-point travel begins with the launch of the AS2 supersonic business jet which will commence production in 2023. Designed to be inherently environmentally responsible from first flight, the AS2 is the first supersonic jet designed with the ability to accept 100% synthetic fuel and reach supersonic speeds without the need for an afterburner.

The manufacture of 300 AS2's is planned for the first decade of production. The AS2 will be the first aircraft to be assembled at the company's new global headquarters in Melbourne, Florida – Aerion Park. The state-of-the-art facility – powered by clean energy – will incorporate headquarters operations plus an integrated campus for research, design, build and support of the company's new supersonic aircraft.
