Bombardier has expanded its use of Siemens Digital Industries Software by adopting more tools from the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio. Alongside its existing use of Teamcenter for product lifecycle management since 2018, it will now also implement NX software for 3D modelling, simulation and manufacturing, and Capital software for electrical and electronic systems design.
The integration is intended to streamline engineering processes and enable the use of a comprehensive digital twin across an aircraft’s full lifecycle. Bombardier is replacing its legacy systems to create a unified digital thread using Teamcenter as the backbone. This move brings mechanical and electrical design into a collaborative PLM-based environment.
The manufacturer has also adopted Siemens’ Mendix low-code platform, with its first Mendix app offering improved efficiency for end-users by connecting external data sources to Teamcenter via enhanced search functionality. Siemens says the Xcelerator solution improves data quality and security while also easing the workload of Bombardier’s internal IT team.
“Bombardier’s selection of a wider set of software from the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio demonstrates the value the company has realized from using our software as well as the value of a cohesive and comprehensive digital thread to optimize the aircraft development process and accelerate delivery of innovation,” says Siemens Digital Industries Software’s VP of Aerospace and Defence Industry Todd Tuthill.
“We are pleased to be working closely with Siemens to enhance and optimise our digital aircraft development process,” adds Bombardier senior director Glenn Chapnik. “With the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio, we can transform our processing capabilities and maximise all parts of the manufacturing process, seamlessly ensuring a solid pathway for further acceleration and innovation.”
Bombardier is also collaborating with Siemens to support future workforce development. Together they are working with universities and schools to give students access to Siemens software and build key industry skills.
“Using Siemens Xcelerator provides an integrated solution spanning across engineering disciplines and downstream users, which could facilitate the use of consistent processes and leverage collaboration across the enterprise,” Chapnik adds.
