Stamford, Connecticut-based composites technology company Hexcel is qualifying composite materials for use in JetZero’s Z4 all-wing aircraft as part of the FAA’s FAST programme. The Z4 aims to cut fuel use by up to 50 percent compared to similarly sized tube and wing aircraft, using a blended wing structure that increases lift and reduces drag. Hexcel was selected for the structural demonstration stage of the programme based on its carbon fibre and resin infusion portfolio.
JetZero’s head of structures Kevin Brauning says: “Hexcel has been a key partner in our effort to develop and field an aircraft that will significantly reduce fuel consumption and associated emissions. Throughout our collaboration, Hexcel has continuously demonstrated its industry-leading technical expertise of flexible composite material solutions, and a commitment to sustainable aviation.”
Hexcel VP Stacey Reiersgaard adds: “We are accelerating the development of lightweight composite materials well suited for a blended wing body aircraft design that will redefine the future of sustainable aviation.”
The FAST programme is focused on scaling non-cylindrical composite pressure vessel designs at high production rates. The Z4 features four side-by-side cabins, each with an aisle and separate overhead bins.
