The Sonex Highwing has completed its first flight, with pilot and Sonex Advisory Board member Joe Norris at the controls. The flight took place on the evening of Monday, 30 June 2025.
The Highwing is a two-seat, high-wing aircraft offered in kit form and designed to meet the FAA’s new MOSAIC rules for Light Sport Aircraft. It is made from 6061-T6 aluminium and supports engines between 100 and 130 horsepower, including the AeroVee, Jabiru 3300, UL Power and Rotax 9-series. The aircraft features interchangeable wing tips for aerobatic or utility use, and includes a 42-inch-wide cockpit, 30-gallon fuel capacity and options for either tricycle or taildragger gear. It is aimed at homebuilders looking for a capable light aircraft.
The Highwing prototype’s weight and balance are reportedly on target, with an empty weight of 816 lbs. Sonex says more test flights will take place soon, including with wheel pants and gear leg fairings installed. Performance data is expected in the coming weeks.
The flight was kept short due to a passenger-side door latch issue, but the aircraft performed as expected. Engine temperatures stayed within safe limits and only slight rigging adjustments were required.
