The government of Belgium has signed an agreement with Pratt & Whitney, manufacturer of the F135 engine that powers the F-35 Lightning II. The signing took place at the Base aérienne Jean Offenberg in Florennes, during a ceremony marking the arrival of Belgium’s first F-35, attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Employment and Economy David Clarinval and Minister of Defence Theo Francken.
The partnership underlines Belgium’s commitment to strengthening its industrial participation in the F-35 programme and delivering significant economic returns. It enables Safran Aero Boosters to establish production capability for key components of the F135 engine, and consolidates its partnership with BMT Aerospace to implement an innovative manufacturing concept for the engine’s major components.
These initiatives enhance Belgium’s role in the F-35 value chain while promoting balanced cooperation between Wallonia and Flanders. Safran Aero Boosters CEO François Lepot says the agreement shows strong political commitment to Belgium’s sovereignty and job creation. BMT Aerospace CEO Benoit Reynders adds that the collaboration secures long-term industrial activity and skilled employment in Flanders.
Clarinval says the F-35 programme is a strategic investment in security, sovereignty and industrial strength, and Francken adds that the partnership ensures Belgian innovation in the F-35’s engine.
