Northrop Grumman has opened a 300,000 sq ft engineering facility at its Melbourne, Florida campus, hosting an employee celebration inside the building's high-bay area alongside local, state and federal leaders.

The facility will provide space for more than 1,200 engineers and 17 secure laboratories dedicated to advanced aircraft design, adding to a Melbourne site that already spans 2 million square feet and employs around 5,000 people. Within months, the building is expected to be operating as a secure engineering environment, with much of the work carried out inside it remaining undisclosed.

Tom Jones, corporate vice president and president, Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems, says: “We're continuing to grow in Florida, turning years of investment and experience into real capabilities our warfighters need. This facility reinforces Melbourne as the epicenter of sixth-generation aircraft. Between these walls in just a few months, we will have cutting-edge labs, and hundreds of skilled engineers coming together in a world-class facility.”

The event included remarks from Jones alongside U.S. Rep. Mike Haridopolos (FL-8), Florida Secretary of Commerce Alex Kelly and Florida State Sen. Debbie Mayfield (District 19). It underlined Melbourne's expanding position within America's defence industrial base, as the site continues to build out workforce and infrastructure to support next-generation airpower programmes.
