Burnishing covers the cold-working finishing process in which hardened tools or media displace and plastically deform a metallic surface without material removal, encompassing roller burnishing, ball burnishing, and diamond burnishing of bores, shafts, and bearing surfaces to achieve tight surface-finish tolerances (Ra), close dimensional accuracy, and compressive residual stresses that enhance fatigue life on aerospace structural and rotating components.
