Wash primers are thin, reactive coating formulations applied directly to bare metallic substrates — including aluminium alloys, steel and titanium — to provide corrosion inhibition and adhesion promotion prior to topcoat or build-coat application; they typically combine polyvinyl butyral (PVB) resin with phosphoric acid and chromate or chrome-free inhibitive pigments, and are qualified to specifications such as DEF STAN and MIL-P standards.
