Passivation covers chemical surface treatments applied to metallic aerospace components — principally stainless steels and titanium alloys — to remove free iron, contaminants and thermally induced oxide layers, thereby restoring and enhancing the native passive oxide film; processes typically employ nitric acid or citric acid immersion baths in accordance with standards such as AMS 2700 and ASTM A967.
