Boeing and Airbus absorb Spirit operations

Boeing has taken on Spirit AeroSystems's commercial programmes, aftermarket operations and 15,000 staff, while Airbus has added six global production facilities to its network.

Boeing has completed its acquisition of Spirit AeroSystems, incorporating all Boeing-related commercial operations including fuselage production for the 737, 767, 777 and 787, along with structures for the P-8 and KC-46. It also now owns Spirit's aftermarket businesses, making it its largest spare parts supplier and expanding its global MRO footprint.

Boeing has also created a new unit, Spirit Defense, to continue as an independent supplier for defence customers. It will be a non-integrated subsidiary of Boeing Defense, Space & Security, with separate governance and operations. Spirit sites in Wichita, Dallas, Tulsa and Prestwick are joining Boeing, along with part of the Belfast site, which will operate as Short Brothers, a Boeing Company. Around 15,000 employees are transferring.

“This is a pivotal moment in Boeing’s history,” says Kelly Ortberg, president and CEO of Boeing. “Our focus is on maintaining stability so we can continue delivering high quality airplanes, differentiated services and advanced defense capabilities.”

Kansas officials praised the move. Senator Jerry Moran says it will “help build bridges between Seattle and Wichita and bring new opportunities to the Air Capital of the World.” Congressman Ron Estes says it “continues to build on the successes of a century of U.S. flight.”

Meanwhile, Airbus has closed its acquisition of Spirit’s Airbus-dedicated industrial assets. Over 4,000 employees have joined the company through the transfer of sites in Kinston (USA), Saint-Nazaire (France), Casablanca (Morocco), Belfast (Northern Ireland), Prestwick (Scotland) and the relocation of A220 pylon production to Toulouse.

“This milestone marks a special moment for all of us at Airbus,” says Florent Massou, EVP Operations, Commercial Aircraft. Airbus received $439 million in compensation and further amounts to cover liabilities under the agreement.
