Beyond Aero advances hydrogen-electric jet design for certification
Thursday, 20 March 2025
The BYA-1 features a refined fuel cell system, enhanced safety measures, and reduced operating costs to support sustainable business aviation.

Beyond Aero has unveiled key refinements to its BYA-1 hydrogen-electric light jet, incorporating engineering advancements to improve safety, efficiency and operational performance. The aircraft now features a battery-free hydrogen fuel cell system with built-in redundancy, optimised gaseous hydrogen tank placement and an advanced thermal management system for its electric ducted fans. These upgrades enhance reliability while reducing maintenance complexity and operating costs by up to 55%.

Since its debut at Le Bourget in 2023, the BYA-1 has been refined to accelerate certification, with its modular engine architecture exceeding industry safety standards. The jet’s all-electric powertrain eliminates high-temperature turbines and significantly cuts fuel costs compared to Jet A-1 and sustainable aviation fuels.

To validate its design and readiness for market adoption, Beyond Aero has assembled an expert advisory committee including former executives from EASA, Air France, Airbus and HondaJet. Committee members have endorsed the aircraft’s maturity, confirming its suitability for certification.

The BYA-1 offers a range of 800 NM with NBAA reserves and a six-passenger configuration, covering over 80% of European flight routes. Designed for constrained airports like London City, it features a 620-metre takeoff roll, larger elliptical windows and noise-reducing electric propulsion for a quieter cabin experience.

Beyond Aero is actively working with EASA to define a certification framework for hydrogen-electric aircraft, having submitted its Design Organisation Approval (DOA) application in April 2024. The company aims to establish regulatory pathways that will set a precedent for hydrogen-electric aviation.
