Magnetic chip detectors (MCDs) monitor aircraft lubrication systems — including gearboxes, engines, and transmissions — by attracting ferromagnetic wear debris suspended in oil onto a permanent-magnet probe, with designs ranging from passive single-pole units to electrically monitored variants that trigger a cockpit warning when bridging particles complete a circuit across the detector's electrode gap.
