Engine crankcases are structural pressure-bearing enclosures that house and support the crankshaft, bearings, and reciprocating assembly in piston-driven aerospace powerplants, typically manufactured from high-strength aluminium alloy or magnesium alloy castings machined to tight dimensional tolerances, with features for oil-passage integration, line-boring of bearing bores, and compliance with FAR Part 33 structural integrity requirements.
