Brush seals are compliant, non-contacting or lightly contacting sealing elements used to limit leakage across pressure differentials at rotating interfaces, particularly in gas turbine engines at compressor and turbine stages. They comprise densely packed metallic bristles — typically cobalt-chromium or Haynes alloy wire — brazed or welded into a backing plate and front plate assembly, accommodating rotor excursions whilst maintaining controlled clearance.
