Laser altimeters determine terrain clearance and precise altitude by emitting pulsed or continuous-wave laser energy — typically in near-infrared wavelengths using Nd:YAG or diode-pumped solid-state sources — and measuring time-of-flight or phase-shift returns, with onboard signal processing converting LiDAR-derived range data into calibrated altitude outputs for flight management and terrain-following applications.
